Awesome Biker Nights totally AWESOME

The Tommy Bolin Tribute Band kicked off Awesome Biker Nights on Friday, June 19th with a bang. Special thanks to Val Greger for getting us in this year!
It was fantastic to see Johnnie Bolin in such good health and spirits! Right next to him, Bobby Berge, on his drums to set up the dual drumming that took everyone by surprise. With Sam Irish on bass, Gary Gunderson on vocals and guitar, Jesse Christen on vocals and guitar and introducing a local guitarist, Ryan Baker on vocals and guitar. They all pulled it together for a great evening of Tommy Bolin's music.

Ryan Baker did an awesome job on vocals! He, also, had the priviledge of playing my Tommy Bolin Tribute guitar. I'm sure that it is the first time people in Sioux City have seen the guitar up front, close and personal.
A photo page will be up soon....

And heerrreee'zzz Johnnie....

Here are a few recent photos of Mr. Johnnie Bolin taken recently by Beth Anderson. Our friend and, I guess, personal photographer?! Thank you for all your help and support, Beth!
Ladies and Gentlemen:

See you there!!!!

Back in .biz

Hello everyone! As announced yesterday on our own Z-98 radio station with Andy and Chopper Scott, Johnnie and I taking baby steps back into the .biz. Our first official business getting Johnnie back in the drummer seat will be Awesome Biker Night on June 19th in Sioux City, Ia. Also, featuring the one and only Bobby Berge! Appearing will be a Tommy Bolin Tribute band, starting approximately 6pm on the west stage. Following their first live event will be Edgar Winter and Boston. We will have our Tommy Bolin vendor tent again this year.
More news shortly... Don't touch that dial....

We're still kickin'

Hey everyone! Sorry for the absence. Things have been very overwhelming here. It's starting to settle down. Johnnie is doing great! I saw him for the first time yesterday and he looks healthy, happy and terrific! He has lost a ton of weight and is in great spirits.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to my computer, merchandise, etc. They detected mold in Johnnie's house and it's undergoing restoration.
We have every intention to continue our business but we have so much work to do to catch up. Please have patience with us. We'll be back on track as soon as we can.

Who needs Jenny Craig?

Went up to see Johnnie today! Half of him is missing. He has lost 20 lbs. of poison (fluid) in 5 days! His kidney's are improving and beginning to function. He just looked so peaceful and comfortable. He is able to move around more freely. He has a physical therapist that gets him up to do his laps around the halls. He is using a walker as of today.
All the swelling he had on him when he went into the hospital made it impossible to function. He couldn't bend his leg to put one foot on his other knee because his skin was so taunt. It looked like he was absolutely going to burst.
He has a long way to go but at least he is out of the woods. I asked him if I could take a picture so everyone could see how well he is doing. I thought it may help you as it did me today. I'll report changes on this site as well. Here it is....

He's not ready for any rock show but I think this is the best picture of him taken in the last year. Let's keep praying and you can always blog on Johnnie Bolin's page, www.tbolin.com and www.caringbridge.org, click on visit in the top left corner and enter patient's name johnbolin. All lower case, no spaces.
Rock on, Johnnie!

Blog feature added to Johnnie Bolin page

I just added a blog feature under the Johnnie Bolin tab. Post your hearts out. We love hearing your ideas, concerns and thoughts.

Keep the love alive...

Keep 'em coming everyone. It's amazing to hear from all of you. From all corners of the world. It is truly remarkable and heart warming. Johnnie will appreciate each and everyone of you! Thank you for the support. This is going to be a rough road to recovery. So, don't give up! We need all you've got!

Johnnie is doing well

Hey everyone, you've probably heard that Johnnie is currently in the hospital. He is improving but needs lots of rest. No visitor's are allowed as of right now. It may be next week. He is being treated by a fantastic group of cardioligist's.
We've set up a web-site for everyone to go to check on his condition daily and it has a neat little guest book to sign into. You can leave any message, prayer or wishes for him there. I will print them out and read them to him daily. The server that this is on saves all messages for months.
Thank you all for your concern and support!

Go to www.caringbridge.org, go to visit and enter johnbolin. All lower case, no spaces.

"Touched by Magic" by Greg Prato

Finally, I get to spill the beans on the upcoming release of "Touched by Magic". Greg Prato is currently reviewing his copy. If all is well, the book will be available for purchase next week. I will provide all the information needed to purchase the book and even read a sample chapter. This is a print-on-demand set up at lulu.com.
Johnnie and I have had the priviledge of reading the manuscript. Neither one of us could put it down. We actually hid it from each other to be able to continue reading it without interruption.
The book is totally absorbing. It's impossible to put down, no matter how much you know about Tommy. Greg's format is unique. Done completely by interviews of ALL the major players that lead you through Tommy Bolin's life, from beginning to the tragic end. It's not always pretty or what you'd like to think...but it's the truth and it's thorough. It's brilliant, in bringing Tommy and all his accomplishments to life. There isn't a soul out there that won't learn new things that they weren't  aware of. Truthfully, even Johnnie Bolin, put loose ends together. Be prepared! It's emotional and reviving at the same time. It's what we've all been waiting for....I'd like to thank Greg Prato for doing it and not giving up! A job that hundreds of others have attempted many times since Tommy's death 32 years ago, almost to the day.

Celebrate Tommy's life and music today

Dec. 4th, 2008, 32 years since Tommy Bolin passed away. It's odd to write or think about celebrating his death. However, this year is very different than most since 1976. How? The word timeless comes up again and again when talking about Tommy and his music. Not just recently either. Eric Clapton said this 30 years ago and the list goes on from there...
If you play Tommy's music today and tell someone it's a new release, they ask questions and want to know where to get it or who is that? It's Tommy Bolin!
If you play music from the 70's, 80's or 90's, it's all time stamped as to which decade it was released. Peace, love, hair bands, grudge or alternative. You know when it was done. Not with Tommy.

I've been talking with Johnnie and wondering how to start out so late in the day. Of course neither of us knew quite how to handle the situation. Being new at this (you can't get any more novice than we are) I just listened to his thoughts and recollections of years gone by. I'll share what hit me the most.
It's weird to celebrate the day my brother died, it always has been.
Right after Tommy's death there was a short number of years when his memory was honored by those who knew him, then a long time that nobody acknowlegded or remembered. That was really sad! Then, it came back and the Bolin Foundation was born. Along with the Archives and we've had a solid fan base. This year, not only have more people begun to respect and appreciate Tommy's legacy and contribution to the music world but music companys have done things to recreate Tommy sound, built guitars with Tommy face on them, covers of major magazine with him on it, articles featuring how to play like him. Books are being written. It's like it's contagious and it's growing. That is what matters!
Everyone that has hung on all these years, so faithfully, must feel such joy in their hearts. Thanks for not forgetting but more thanks for remembering and spreading the love...
Narada Michael Waldon always says, "Big Love!" That's what it is.

To post or read posts from other Tommy fan's, please visit www.tbolin.com. Lot's of wonderful people on there sharing sorrow for the loss and gratitude for the music Tommy Bolin played for us.

Tommy guitar live at Chesterfield's

We have a club in Sioux City, Ia. that has open jam night on Wednesday's. I took my "Teaser" down and broke it out for Johnnie Bolin and a couple professional guitar players. I just wanted to share a couple shots from that night. Needless to say, Johnnie never did play drums that night. The guitar sounded awesome.

Looking for a "Teaser" guitar?

I have been provided with a list of Dean Guitars dealer's that have ordered the Tommy Bolin "Teaser" tribute guitar.
This may make it easier to locate one before they sell out. Feel free to call any of these stores with any questions or to purchase.

Official Teaser Release in Sioux City

The guitar release party held at Ray's Midbell Music in Sioux City, Ia was a huge success. There were two local musicans there to play the Teaser guitar for the audience. Jimi Peterson and Roger Rothwell, both very acccomplished players and very connected with the Bolin scene in Sioux City. The Tommy Bolin memorabilia display, the presentation, guestion and answer session, the merchadise give aways and attendee's being able to pick up and play the guitar made the day an emotional but very exciting one.

Photo page coming! Also, another contest for people that purchase the guitar and send in photos with their guitars.

Newly Released Deep Purple Book

Front Cover (Photo by Rich Galbraith)

Hey, Martin Popoff here. Just got the boxes containing my new book! It’s called:

Gettin’ Tighter: Deep Purple ‘68 – ‘76

Details for ya: The book is 250 pages long, with quite a few previously never published photos by Rich Galbraith, plus pictures of ads and tour book pages and album covers from around the world. Love this band… one of my faves (although the Gillan band is even better!). I’ve interviewed members of Purple around 30 times, and for this one have also talked to another 20 or so fellow rockers about the boys. Thought I’d be provocative as well and put Tommy Bolin on the cover!

What you get is my usual format – one chapter per album, every song examined, lots of looks at the tours as well. Y’ know, I think I’m getting better at this as I go, so this is one of my most thorough of the band bios yet. And FYI, I will be doing a book that will cover the ‘84 reunion to the present as well, but that’s a good year off.

Books will be signed by me to you, so make clear if it’s a Christmas present or whatever!

Price including shipping:

US orders: $31.00 US funds

Int’l orders (surface mail): $34.00 US funds

Int’l orders (air mail): $38.00 US funds

Canadian orders: $29.00 Cdn. funds

PayPal happily accepted!

Ask me if you’d like a PayPal invoice, or just do yer usual and direct funds to martinp@inforamp.net

Or mail payment (personal check in US funds, cash, or INTERNATIONAL money order), to:

Email me at martinp@inforamp.net with any further questions, and see www.martinpopoff.com for descriptions, cover art and ordering info for my other available 18 or so books. Nice savings on shipping can be had if you take a few things, and as you know, I’m always good for swingin’ a deal for two books or more. Just email me for a quote. The first four Ye Olde Metals are still available!

Thanks!

Johnnie Bolin holding his brother's guitar

It was an emotional day Saturday, Nov. 1st, at Ray's Midbell Music in Sioux City, IA. Michael Angelo Batio did an awesome clinic for Dean Guitars, including his double neck guitar designed by Dean. After his appearance Midbell announced our guitar release party being held there next Saturday, Nov. 8th from 1-3.
Johnnie, holding the first public Teaser guitar by Dean, getting pretty choked up as he invited everyone to next week's event.
This is a huge accomplishment for Tommy lovers and fans. Initiated and designed by Nick Simmons, formerly from Cedar Rapids, Ia. Nick is a professional artist, guitar player and huge fan of  Tommy Bolin. Thank you Nick, for all time and effort you put into this project. To Elliott Rubinson, CEO of  Dean Guitars, for creating the guitar and making our dreams come true! Also, Pat and Josh from Dean Guitars Custom Shop. You guys ROCK!

                                               Here it is!

From Vicenza, Italy to Sioux City, Ia...

We recently received an e-mail from Kazumi Muira and husband, Paolo. They came all the way from Italy to visist Tommy's gravesite in Sioux City, Ia. They were kind enough to share a couple pictures with us. I'll pass them on to you.

                                 Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City, Ia

                      Kazumi                                      Paolo

Kazumi explained in her email that she couldn't smile. It was very emotional for them. She had heard that Tommy's father had passed away. However, finding that his mother, Barb and brother, Rick (Pudge) were also there, was a bit overwhelming.
They did get lost in Sioux City attempting to find Tommy's resting place. I'm happy to report that they received help from many local people in locating it.
Of course, to anyone that comes to the area, please call Johnnie or Tamy. We are more than happy to assisst anyone. Kazumi didn't want to disturb Johnnie. I assure you, he welcomes these types of call. As did his whole family. Many people have discussed how open and friendly the Bolin's were/are. They loved to share their home, stories and assisstance when called upon. Johnnie still is, to this day, the same.

ALL THINGS TOMMY BOLIN...

A guitar....  A book....  Guitar Player magazine... A website.... Two Tommy Bolin fests.... A new C.D.... New merch.... Tons of huge Tommy Bolin fans....
What a year, huh? And, we're not done yet!

The guitar...
I got an e-mail from Elliott Rubinson today. The first guitar has been assembled and finished! We're excited! Johnnie is making arrangements to get the certificates of authenticy signed and ready to go.

The book...

                                   Greg Prato

I got an e-mail from Gred Prato (author of the forthcoming Tommy book) today, also. He's putting the final touches on the book, due to be released by December/Januaryish.
As Greg said, "I'm getting it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak."  He did close to 50 interviews and is in the process of rounding up photos and releases from the photographers to be published as well.
Greg believes the Tommy book will be set up the same way his first-ever book 'A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other: The Story of Shannon Hoon and Blind Melon.'  Which is a print-on-demand set up through Lulu.com. It is available now.

There is a sample chapter from this book, along with purchasing information at:
http://www.lulu.com/content/3997101

We'll be sure to let you know when the Tommy book is available.

The rest is history! See below...

Tommy Bolin Teaser guitar in production

It's true. I heard it myself from Elliott Rubinson, owner of Dean Guitars. The bodies have been cut and sent to paint. The necks are being cut now. All this happens in Tampa, Florida. Get ready and get your calls in if you would like to own one of these guitars.
There are only 100 being made. I know that almost 50 of them have been sold already.
Whether you're a player or a collector, this is one time you don't want to think about it too long...
More about this exciting news under the Dean Guitar tab at the top of the page.

The Tribute....

While everyone was getting things ready inside, the line and excitement started outside Herman's door. There were a couple shout outs from the employees that the line was getting longer and it was time to start letting people in. That's when we knew these people were ready to see a Tommy Bolin show. Streaming in wearing the oldest and newest of their Tommy gear.

Will Rockit was the opening band from the Denver area. And they did rock it! As promised. This band is all about the music no BS, just hard driving, foot stomping, high energy groove. The energy delivered from this band touched everyone and started the evening on the right note! Then keeping the energy and excitement going.

We were glad to see most of the band members stick around for the entire night.

Next up, Tommy Bolin Tribute Band. The band that was there to bring back and celebrate Tommy's music. A yearly festival attended every year by a majority of the crowd. Hard core fans still anticipating this special event after 32 years of their hero's passing. Just to watch, listen and share the magic that lives on through these very special people.
The musicians out did themselves bringing back Tommy's music. How could they not? Having the original members of Tommy's bands Zepher, Energy and the Tommy Bolin Band such as Johnnie Bolin, G. Wilson and Bobby Berge. Adding masters in the industry such as Troy Johnson, founder and bass player of JRZ Systems, Hal McCormack formerly of Survivor, Tora Tora, Deep South and currently with Black Oak Arkansas and all the way from Austin, Texas, Davey Ducharme-Jones, from The Penetrator's.
The magic began with Teaser. A song many thought would be one of the last songs they played. However, it was done with great confidence, considering the ammunition these guys knew they had in store for the most experienced Tommy Bolin fan. Some of these songs have never been covered in previous fests. Including, Mind Transplant going all the way back to Alphonse Mouzon.

It was a mind blowing performance that had people staring wide-eyed and jaws dropping, not knowing which musician to watch. Stratus off of Spectrum with Billy Cobham, was a favorite, also. Right along with Red Skies, Gypsy Soul and Savannah Woman.
Shake the Devil, which wasn't even on the song list for the night and wasn't rehearsed, went off without a hitch after the crowd requested to hear it. These artists are just that seasoned and everything anyone would expect for an event like this.
Of course, Post Toastee, Wild Dogs, People People and Teaser, were great for audience participation being the most popular and well known songs in Tommy's collection.
Another absolute suprise for the audience was the double drumming of Johnnie Bolin and Bobby Berge. With Bolin laying down a strong foundation, Berge was playing over the top. What a combination! It left people stunned by the talent of these two drummers. They had a blast and watching them was even more unbelieveable! Johnnie and Bobby have a long history together which was obvious to anyone that could keep their eyes on them.
They battled back and forth, each knowing exactly what the other was doing. The professionalism and close friendship of these two could be felt by all, as they smiled and nodded to each other as they played their hearts out to the audience, knowing Tommy must be looking down on them with such pride!

Before the show....

Where to start? Probably with the rehearsal Thursday night at the Ramada Inn. Actually, in room 319. Start time 7:30. One double room and a whole lot of people!
Wonder what the folks around us thought? We didn't get any complaints about noise. I guess that's probably because it wasn't noise. I feel so fortunate to have been able to attend this rehearsal and be in the presence of such great musicians working together to give us an unforgettable night of Tommy Bolin music.
One of the neatest things about this to me was all genius and talented musicians knowing Tommy's music library so thoroughly. It was amazing to watch and listen to all the suggestions from each player about how to do certain parts of each song. Having original band members there that not only played and recorded with Tommy but were a part of the creation of these songs.

Behind the scene and special people in Denver

First, we'd like to thank Alan Roth, the owner of Herman's Hideaway for letting us have our fest there. Not only that, but having Will Rockit kick of the night with outstading music and musicians, the use of equipment, sound, DVD recording of the night and also the use of his club to hold our fan jam on Saturday afternoon.
Alan has a long history with Tommy. From his very first gigs in the area and throughout his career. All the way up to spending Tommy's last Thanksgiving with him. Which Johnnie and I found very interesting.
Andy, Mike and Chris, can't forget M.P. also from Herman's for all of their contributions in setting up this event!

Alan Roth              Andy Bercaw
Unfortunately, I didn't get photo's of the other people from Herman's.
We would like to thank Paul Epstein and Natasha at Twist and Shout in Denver for selling buttons locally and advertising on their on-line annoucements.
G. Brown and Doug Clifton from KCUV 102.3 FM radio for announcing the Tommy Bolin Fest on the air and giving  t-shirts and buttons to fans that called in on their give aways for the event.

Mike Drumm for all the contact information and follow-up work he did for us. Also, for coming to Herman's for the show and getting us Archive C.D.'s to sell.

 Mike Drumm
Tay Hamilton of Forth Yeer Freshman, the last band that played at the fest, for all the promotional running around he did on his own time and gas.

 Tay Hamilton
From Anheuser-Bush, Gerad Gilbert, for his special effort in getting us posters for the show.
G. Wilson for getting us in contact with Christopher Murphy from the Music Buzz.

    G. Wilson
John and Bev Herdt for equipment and picking Johnnie Bolin up from the hotel to attend the fan jam.

     John Herdt                             Bev Herdt
Michael Heuvelman for supplying us with his guitar amp and bringing it to our hotel for rehearsal Thursday night. I'd like to add that he trusted us to take care of it and return it to him the next day. That's huge for a musician to do when they don't know the people they're loaning their equipment to.

Michael H.
Last but not least, Annie Ducharme-Jones and Tamara Sanders for helping me with merchandise. Also, photo's from Annie.

Annie Ducharme-Jones            Tamy and Tamara
I knew I'd do this. I'd like to add Dan, the sound man from Herman's on Saturday. He said he had a blast. I hope he did! I know coming in that early on a Saturday isn't that easy.
I hope this helps people realize how many people, in so many different positions and such different walks of life, it really takes to pull off an event like this. No one, in any capacity, could do it alone. So, everybody and anybody, give yourself a huge pat on the back for making this one of the best Bolin events in many years!

Denver Tommy Bolin Festival

The 2008 Tommy Bolin Fest held at Herman's Hideaway on August 29th a was huge success in many ways. The musicians out did themselves bringing back Tommy's music. How could they not? Having the original members of  Tommy's bands  Zepher, Energy and the Tommy Bolin Band such as Johnnie Bolin, G. Wilson and Bobby Berge. Adding masters in the industry such as Troy Johnson, Hal McCormack and Davey Ducharme-Jones.

There is much more to report and many more people to mention, as well as thousands of pictures to sort through.
Until tomorrow....Hear 'em Howl

Aaron Howell on vocals, Tay Hamilton on lead guitar, Jerry Cass on rhythm guitar,  Logan O'Connor on bass guitar and Ty Blosser on drums. Tay Hamilton is a 5th generation Tommy Bolin fan. Tommy's music has been passed down through his family and I doubt it will end with Tay.

With a line up like this, I have no doubt that we will be creating  and rediscovering music and memories. While celebrating one of Denver's greatest guitar players! Tommy Bolin left his mark on everyone he came in contact with.

Tommy Girl Shirts

Hey Ladies, here is a photo of the womans Tommy shirt.
The lettering is white sparkly letters that doesn't wash out. They are very light weight and are not clingy.
They sell for $25.
This is my daughter, Sunday, modeling for us. We are in front of a post office where I happened to be shipping merchandise that day.

Record breaking attendence in Sioux City, Iowa

Wow, everyone, we had record breaking attendance for the Sioux City Bash!! That's without a lot of the regulars and people that I know are waiting for the Denver fest.
Davey Jones and Hal McCormack were unstoppable. Watching them was amazing, especially because they had just met for an afternoon the day before the gig to work out a couple songs. I heard the rehearsal. I knew we were in for a treat. Davey's vocals are probably the best Tommy vocals I've ever heard, Johnnie Bolin was his amazing self times 10. Add Sam Irish on bass, such a exceptional player. Top that off with Terry Brooks on keyboards and you have an absolutely unforgettable performance that will be talked about for a long time.
Introducing Fringe Benefits to Sioux City as a serious rock band defininately got they're point across. Look for them to be playing at the local venues.
Bobby Berge and the Basher's with Dave Napier on sax another unbelievable performance. Just leaves you always wanting more!
Now, for the Sioux City attendee's! My hat off to everyone of you. At least half,  if not more, were new faces to me. See you all back plus your friends and children as we continue to renew Tommy Bolin and his incredible contribution to the music history!
Rock on and we'll see the rest of you in Denver! We gotta make sure Sioux City can "Hear ya Howl" all the way from Denver, Colorado....
